Ansals guilty of criminal neglect

The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the conviction of Gopal Ansal and Sushil Ansal in 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case.
A two-judge bench differed on the quantum of punishment for Ansals. The issue on quantum of punishment referred to a three-judge bench in view of difference in opinion between the two judges.
The apex court further stated that Ansals were more concerned about making money than ensuring safety of cinemagoers.
The court said "A contemptuous disregard to law by owners of Uphaar cinema hall led to loss of lives."
