India Debate: Can the BJP brush away the 'saheb' tapes as a scandalous & frivolous issue? - News X

The controversy over the saheb tapes as they are being called is refusing to blow over. Last evening the BJP sought refuge behind a letter written by the father of the alleged stalking victim to the national commission for women. In his letter the father conceded that the girl was aware of the surveillance as the family had demanded it.

He had hoped that the NCW would drop the issue. But the father's letter has blown up in the BJP's face as the NCW has decided to disregard it and seek a clarification from the Modi government as to whether the constitutional right to privacy was violated by the misuse of the state machinery.

The Modi government which till now has maintained a stoic silence will now have to provide answers. It will no longer be able to brush away the 'saheb' tapes as a scandalous frivolity. Most importantly the Modi government and his spokespersons will have to answer a basic question: how was the BJP till now trying to brush aside the entire row as a closed chapter?
