An unwed mother can be named as the sole legal guardian of her child without the nod of the father, reigned the Supreme Court in a historical judgment on Monday. It is not necessary for the mother to unveil the identity of the father and add him as a party to the guardianship petition in certain cases, held the Apex Court. SC verdict would lend a hand to the countless single mothers who face several challenges while dealing with the day to day situations as a single parent. As per the bench headed by Justice Vikramjit Sen, in the best interest of the child, demands to kill the procedural necessity of issuing a notice to the father when a guardianship petition is proposed.
