Heavy security deployed in Delhi's Bawana ahead of Muharram

Bawana in northwest Delhi, where a mahapanchayat has resolved not to allow Tuesday's Muharram march to pass through the market area, remained tense on the eve of the event amid heavy police deployment in the area.

Tension over the religious procession appears to have spread to neighbouring Kanjhawala, where police on Monday held a meeting with various community groups over the route of the Muharram march.

In Bawana's JJ colony, home to the majority of Muslims in the area, residents said they were going to lock themselves inside their homes to avoid any confrontation. "We have decided to stay home on Tuesday for our children's safety," said Mohammad Muzir, a JJ colony resident. He feared that even a small incident could trigger violence on Tuesday.
