Indian Muslims will live for India, they will die for India, they will not want anything bad for India,” Modi said during a television interview broadcast on Friday.

The Indian premier further downplayed the threat from extremist groups as not being about a specific country or race, calling it a fight between “humanity and inhumanity”.

The statement comes after the al-Qaeda chief, Ayman al-Zawahiri, recently said his terrorist group aims to extend its scope of activities to Myanmar, Bangladesh and India.

Zawahiri also noted that “al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent” would escalate attacks across the troubled region.

Additionally, the ISIL terrorist group has claimed a handful of followers in India during the last few months.

Meanwhile, India has asked officials in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar states to declare a state of high alert following the recent threats.

Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh has met senior intelligence officials to discuss new security measures and to brief the prime minister.

A number of Indian cities have been hit by serial blasts and terror attacks in recent years. Targets have ranged from mosques and Hindu temples to trains and courthouses.

At least 166 people were killed in Mumbai on November 26, 2008 after 10 militants attacked luxury hotels and several key locations across the city.
