The Mulayam Singh Yadav story: Wrestler to leader

Midway between Etawah and Mainpuri falls a not-so-nondescript tehsil which till not very long ago was just another ordinary village.

It stands out, not just because of the sudden proliferation of the red-and-green flags of the Samajwadi Party, but also because of the amount of construction that is taking place. In a sea of green fields, a cluster of impressive buildings, all of them coloured bright white, appear from nowhere. It is as if one is catapulted into another world.

Saifai is no ordinary village-turned-tehsil. It is Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's native place. Its 5,500 inhabitants are basking in the glory assigned to the place by virtue of its VVIP status.

Its soil has already produced a chief minister, but the people are craving for more. Could he play the role of the kingmaker, as is being speculated in many circles ?
Can he realize his ambitions of becoming the country's Prime Minister after the general election ? Ask the people of Saifai. The answer is a resounding ``Yes.'' The tehsil is filled with an air of expectancy.

"Saheb, he had very nearly become the Prime Minister in 1996. Even though he missed the bus then, we're sure he'll make it this time,'' asserts Kamlesh Kumar, whose `kachcha' house is at a stone's throw from Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav's residence, an impressive double-storeyed structure, noticeable from a distance.

It wasn't like this though earlier. People here recall how the 65-year-old Samajwadi Party chief had to struggle his way to the position that he has attained today.

"His father was a humble farmer, who made his living by shepherding cattle and tilling whatever little land he had,`` says Mr Narayan Das Dubey, a childhood friend of the UP chief minister. ``Their's was a huge family, comprising, besides Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav's parents, his four brothers and a sister,'' Mr Dubey added.
