60% of rural India lives on Rs. 35 a day: National Sample Survey - NewsX

A few months ago the Government kicked up a huge controversy by fixing the poverty line at a consumption spending of Rs 26 per day for villagers and Rs 32 for people living in the cities. Well the 66th round of National Sample Survey figures are out. And they tell the dismal story that a majority of people are not spending anything significantly more than these poverty benchmarks. The 66th round of National Sample Survey calculated the consumer spend between July 2009 and June 2010... The figures make for really dismal reading.
