Maldives President quits after coup- NewsX

Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has resigned following a mutiny led by the police and weeks of demonstrations. The Vice President will now take over following Nasheed's resignation. Earlier in the day, police took over the state television broadcasting station, joining opposition protesters calling for the President's resignation. The move by the police marked a major escalation of three weeks of street demonstrations by anti-government activists. They had been demanding for Nasheed to step down after he ordered the arrest of Criminal Court Chief Justice Abdulla Mohamed last month on charges of misconduct and favouring opposition figures. Maldives Supreme Court and prosecutor general have called for Mohamed's release, but he remains in military custody.
