05:24to the 10th annual World Power Wheel Standing Championships
05:27here at the Playground of Power.
05:29Byron Dragway, Byron, Illinois.
05:33My name's Rick Bronowski from Green Bay, Wisconsin,
05:35and I drive a 72 Nova.
05:40Let me tell you a little bit about my car.
05:42I got a 540 cubic inch big block Chevrolet.
05:45The nitrous system is all hooked in with the fuel system
05:49that feeds the carburetor.
05:50Fuel enrichment for the nitrous.
05:52The nitrous goes around the back.
05:54I got a basic plate system.
05:56About 300 to 350 horse shot depending on the day.
06:03It's flat black.
06:04We just left it in primer.
06:06It's kind of just subtle.
06:07I don't want to draw any more attention than I need to.
06:10I drive it on the street.
06:12I got the big tires under the back.
06:15It gives you maximum traction if you want to do wheelies.
06:17Tends to keep things a little more stable
06:19if things get out of shape.
06:21NHRA requires a parachute for anything over 150 miles an hour.
06:25And if I take the wheelie out of it,
06:27it'll run an 890 ET at 152.
06:31So that's why the chute's on here.
06:39The license plate obviously is all bent up
06:41and all the bumper bolts are ground down.
06:51To wheelie a car that is street driven,
06:54it's a 3,600 pound car, it's heavy.
06:56It takes a lot of power.

07:03Depending on how long, you're willing to stay in the throttle.

07:33First is 1,000 bucks.
07:35I believe second is 500 and third is 250.
07:39If I can place in any one of them, I'll be happy.
07:48On my first pass, I shifted a little late.
08:03Momentum went away from it.
08:05It came down a little too soon.
08:06I didn't like it.
08:07So I got to the end, decided that we got time,
08:10we'll back up, and do it again.
08:12I short shifted it, and it hung out there quite a bit further.
08:15I just didn't have enough steam when I was up there.

14:54we'll run about 157 miles an hour at 1090 so we pull the wheelie bars off for
15:00this contest to see what it would do they got real wild real fast
15:10another thing about this particular car is although it has ran on nitrous we're
15:15not using any nitrous this weekend this is total horsepower
15:24I was here 10 years ago when this all first started was probably 250 people
15:34here maybe 8-10 cars that did it it's gotten very wild Ron Lee promotes this
15:40real well the crowd's gonna see a great show
15:44this is our pass this morning just getting the car staged I'm trying to
15:57pedal it there got back after the throttle and it was right back straight
16:01in the air again we broke a fuel pump mount drug the fuel line a little bit

19:44We're at Byron Dragway it's last race of the year it's our annual 10th annual
19:48wheel standing competition my car's a little hurt so I'm just gonna go out
19:51there and beat it to death doing some wheel stands
19:56this is usually a pretty good deal being 10th anniversary it's probably gonna be
20:00twice as big as usual
20:05this is my car it's a 67 Camaro RS has a 468 big block Chevrolet fogger nitrous
20:11system turbo 400 transmission Ford 9-inch rear end okay it's got a full roll
20:18cage it's got a five-point harness window net and trans brake buttons here
20:25and all the nitrous controls are right here that's what will make it do the
20:28wheel stand hopefully first for this wheel standing competition is going to
20:31be a total of $25,000 so it's definitely definitely worth going out there and
20:35trying it this is the nitrous that actually feeds the system this is the
20:38rear fuel tank with any kind of luck this wings gonna be a little bent up
20:42after this weekend to do a good wheel stand you pretty much have to give
20:45everything you got at one shot nitrous comes on as soon as the trans brakes
20:49released and your puts to the floor everything you got it's got to hit it
20:52once for it to work these are on to control the wheel stand first pass
20:56they'll stay on the second pass they'll probably be sitting in the trailer I'm
20:59hoping to bend the license plate over on the thing and drag the back bumper down
21:02the track if they don't do that I want to take it as long as I can

21:54first the nitrous let go of the trans brake button and it was all over she
21:58went straight up it's pretty odd feeling when you go up there and let go of that

22:04back in the seat and you know you're going up and over I tried lifting and
22:07controlling it but it was going too fast couldn't do it so I peddled her a
22:10couple times and stay with it as long as I could
22:19I'm not gonna be able to run the second one I have a hole in my old pan and a
22:22hole in the trans pan so my second one's done it probably damaged probably a
22:26little bit over $1,000 in the parts but it was worth it it's a good time
22:30probably be back next year to try to do it again I had a lot of fun doing this

26:21today's last race of the year wheel staying contest and last race for outlaw
26:25super stock points I was involved in a really tight race for the points today
26:29meant a lot to me I wanted to go to the finals didn't happen but we did get the
26:33car to run a 794 today it's never been in the sevens before it's got a dark
26:37360 head on it I don't like the rest of the big chief motors here so that was a
26:41big deal for us today we're presenting mr. Joe Stiles with the seven-second
26:47club membership he earned it first seven-second pass to be earned it man
26:53so outlaw super stock car it's a dark 360 headed motor it's 565 cubic inches
27:00we want a Jeff Brock fogger from Tampa Florida we basically got all the key
27:05people together to make a conventional headed car that weighs 3,400 pounds
27:09running the sevens cars gone over 172 miles an hour that's real impressive
27:14with a conventional head some of the guys that we run in this class they're
27:18running pro stock style Steve Schmitt cylinder head those are big bucks or you
27:23know low budget right now you're looking at the cockpit of an outlaw car
27:30once you're in first gear you let go of the button once you see this tack light
27:35come on knock it into second tack light again knock it into third and you're
27:40reaching up for the parachute lever when you're up there you got the car stage
27:44nitrous turned on once you let go of this button you get all the horsepower
27:48you could ever ask for as soon as you go wheels are in the air and you're on for
27:53the ride of your life

31:22Corey lamb I'm from Kingston Illinois and I got an 83 Chevy pickup truck
31:30yeah as far as I know I'm the only one with a truck that's what makes it a lot
31:35of fun a lot of people come up and can't believe what they see
31:39that's that's adrenaline rush to have all these people out here watching
31:45when you get in the air it's I kind of can see what's going on beside me there
31:51all you see is blue sky up straight in front of you and look for a shift light
31:55I'm hitting second gear in the air if you get real out of shape you're gonna
31:58know it right away
32:08let me show you what we got here that we're working with 16 inch wide slicks
32:16on weld drag lights the only thing fiberglass is the hood and front bumper
32:21this is the first time the motors have been on alcohol for me I've never done
32:25it before it's a lot nicer it runs cooler a little more maintenance

36:30the nitrous pop they didn't get enough heat in the engine I was gonna hang
36:34back I wasn't gonna even run the qualifier I only had a hundred and
36:38hundred thirty degrees in the engine it's got to be at least 160

36:56yesterday eight flat in 803 I made a change in nitrous pop at the starting line
37:02I made a change in some timing and some engine temperature it didn't like it I
37:06can't do that again I was hoping that it would actually leave the starting line
37:10because if I can get this car off the starting line it'll run easily 795

37:27last time we raced here I had a nitrous pop at the starting line wasn't happy
37:33with the performance of the car to begin with and I've been now testing the cars
37:38went in the seven second range a couple times I'm looking I'm looking to run a
37:44high seven on this pass I'm really hoping I can get it
38:09the car went 791 I mean I was hoping to run 798 and get closer to that 795
38:17mark my best time with this new engine combination was a 797 I did go 98 here
38:23at the last race so I knew it had the potential of doing it I just went 791
38:28set the low of the round I mean it doesn't get any better than that I just
38:34I don't know I mean I you know what I'm just so happy I don't even want to race
38:38anymore I just want to celebrate
38:42we're working on Dan's car to get it ready for the second round of the wheelie
38:46contest and I got the bars up actually I detuned it a little bit so it doesn't
38:52it's not so violent I'm gonna try to pedal it I'm going for the longest wheel
38:56stand that's that's what I'm after right now

39:26pleasure so we're gonna put Joe in this and try to do something stupid right

42:36This weekend is the World Power Wheelstand Championships and we decided we were going to make the trip
42:41It's the first time we've ever been here for it, first time we've ever done it
42:45So we thought it would be great
42:47Stock chassis, stock body, 1980 AMC spring
42:51I built a 437 cubic inch engine for this car this year
42:57And really how we got the power out of it is to really pump a lot of compression into the motor
43:03The glory side is that you win and the recognition that you can get from all over the country
43:10But the bad side of it is, if it flips over, if it goes sideways, hits the wall
43:17I can tear up a vehicle that's going to take me probably 6-8 months to put back together
43:25And when we get out there, we're going to set her on the bumper, we're going to go for a ride
43:29It's going to be a blast
43:48I'm going to run a little higher
44:04Launched the car off the foot brake rather than using the tranny brake
44:07Tried to let it come up a little bit slower so we didn't unload the rear tires
44:11And pulled second gear and the car took a turn to the outside wall

48:41It's a 1974 AMC Gremlin
48:46Well, I'm here to run with the modified Super Street 10.5 inch tire class
48:50and do the wheel stand champion again
48:57We've runnered up last year, the year before we won it
49:00This year we're going to try and win it again
49:02Well, I guess we're going to show you a few things about my car
49:07I painted the car, I own a body shop in Kenosha, Wisconsin
49:15Like I said, the nitrous system is done by Jeff Crockett Applied Nitrous
49:19The carburetor is 1150, it's called an aerosol style carburetor by CNS
49:24The rest of the engine is all made by Indy Cylinder Head
49:27It's all aluminum, 401 it started out as
49:30It's got a Moldex crank, Pinolio rods, pistons, crane cam
49:35We figure the motor makes about 950 to 1000 horsepower
49:38This is the control panel to start the car and all the functions
49:42Of course, we've got our good old seatbelts to hold us in place
49:45when we're ripping the bumper off the back
49:47It's a B8M shifter, it still has the AMC original Ford Flite transmission in it
49:52We've got a pre-styled cage, good strong seatbelts, the seats are mounted securely
49:56I'm not worried about flipping over backwards this year, that's my goal on the road
50:01When the car was built from the factory, it only had a straight 6 cylinder
50:04So we modified it so we can do what we're doing today
50:07I don't think there's anyone faster in the country with an AMC Brembo faster than mine
50:16Well, do the burnout, get to the starting line
50:19Close your eyes, hold on, put it to the floor
50:23I think it's 10 grand to win this year
50:25We're going to hopefully take part of that home with us, or all of it
50:32Well, we left the starting line the first time, it spun the tires
50:35So we backed up, we did it again
50:37It hooked, got out probably 80-90 feet
50:40All four tires are off the ground, on its way down again
50:43I jumped on the throttle again and sent it in the air again
50:46It came down and we're waiting for the second round
51:01I don't know if we're getting enough juice to get the box in there
51:31We had one shot to do it, and it got up
51:59It was about over backwards
52:01We did some damage this time, crushed the oil pan, crushed the headers
52:04Broke the suspension, so we did a good job this time
52:07Scraped the parachute on the track, so it was about over
52:11The front suspension broke on it, so it really didn't have too good a control of the steering
52:15So I did the best I could do and turned around and drove back up here
52:18Hopefully the crowd and everybody loved it
52:25It's going to be a tie
52:26I about put it on the side, he about put it on the lid
52:29We'll see
52:30It comes up and you get a little bit sideways and it starts flopping tire to tire
52:35And you feel the front tire touch and you're just trying to back steer it
52:39It's kind of like being out in a sandbox going in circles
52:43And try to keep it off the wall, all you see is the wall coming at you
52:47All you can think about is stay away, stay away, stay away

52:53When you're done, it's a gee, I'm glad I'm still alive
52:57That I didn't tear up my car, you're just high, you're just up
