Mandala Pooja is a ritualistic worship dedicated to Swami Ayyappa which is annually observed at the Sabarimala AyyappanTemple.

After Makar Vilakku, Mandala Pooja is the second most prominent event at the Ayyappan Temple.

It is the last day of 41 days long traditional austerities that includes special Abhishek ceremony and fasting observed with full dedication and strictness by devotees of Swami Ayyappa.

The devotees believe that the strictness of this Vratam helps in cleansing their soul.

According to the Malayalam Calendar, this special worship is conducted from the first day of the Vrishchikam month till the 11th or 12th day during Dhanu Masam when Mandala Pooja takes place.

These austerities of Mandala Puja ends with the ritual of Kalabhaattam where a mixture of camphor, rose water, saffron and sandalwood paste is poured on the deity. This last ritual is claimed to be the right of the royal family of Pandalam.

It is said in some of the religious scriptures that a person’s destiny can be positively changed by performing Mandala Pooja.

To conduct these festivities, the temple of Sabarimala is kept open for most of the days so that the devotees can pay homage to their beloved Swami.

During this Pooja, the temples of Kerala are visited by a large number of devotees from all over the country.
