In several sects of Hinduism and Jainism, Kuladaivat is a particular deity traditionally worshiped in the family through generations.

This ancestral deity is considered as the guardian or protecting deity of the lineage. These names are derived from two words: Kula, meaning clan and Devata or Daivata, meaning deity.

This ancestral deity is either a god (Kuladevata / Kuladeva) or a goddess (Kuladevi). It can also be an animal or an object that supplants the similar roles.

The worships and rituals dedicated to this deity hold utmost prominence in the family tradition. The followers prefer adopting the same old traditional ways of reverence that run in every family.

It is customary for the families to worship the Kuladaivat at every Dharmic Karya and auspicious events, such as Havan, Lagna, Upanayana (or Munja) and more.

The male child in a family takes the responsibility to carry on these tradition accordingly and further pass it on to the next generation.

In the modern families, the female child also worships her Kula Devata as Ishta Dev even after her marriage.

At times, the families also built a pilgrimage or temple dedicated to the Kuladevata or Kuladevi to regularly obtain the blessing of this deity.

The system of Kuladaivat seems to be more prevalent amongst the Brahmins and Kshatriyas of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa, mainly in the Konkani Saraswat families and Daivajna Brahmin clans.
