1 Tarakasur was the son of Vajranaka and a very powerful demon. He was also known by the name Taraka.
2 He carried severe austerities and asked for boons from the gods that made him formidable to the other deities.
3 Tarakasura had earned a clever boon from Lord Brahma that he could only be defeated by the son of Shiva.
4 It was not easy to breach this boon as during that period Lord Shiva was a complete yogi, who was far from any thoughts of material attachments.
5 It is said that this made the Daityas invincible as through Tarakasura’s help they repeatedly defeated the Hindu gods until heaven was on the verge of collapse.
6 For the destruction of this menacing Asura, the war god called Skanda (Lord Kartikeya) was miraculously born.
7 Kartikeya had killed Tarakasura and his two brothers, namely Simhamukhan and Surapadman.
8 In India, a popular festival called Skanda Sashti marks the death of the demon Tarakasura.
