You might have witnessed many dance recitals that are undertaken for the specific purpose of religious worship. But in the Dakshina Kannada districts, every year a unique form of dance is performed by Mangalorean community members to appease Lord Shiva.

1 Nemostava or Bhuta Kola is an ancient ritualistic worship dance prevalent among Tulu-speaking community in South India.

2 In the term Bhuta Kola, Bhuta stands for Bhoota (spirits or ghosts) and Kola refers to the human effigies.

3 In this ritual, is said to be a form of spirit dance and recital of Bhuta's story, performed by a group of Mangaloreans.

4 It is basically an elaborate dance form similar to Theyyam from Kerala, where the representation of Daivam (god) is performed.

5 Performers dress up in comparatively small and flashy headgear, skirt made up of palm-leaves and elaborate costumes to perform various rituals.

6 There is a popular legend related to this festival, which states that Lord Shiva appeared on earth as Koragajja and Goddess Parvathi as Stree.

7 The event of Bhuta Aradhana is organized by only specific temples and communities around South India, which is annually attended by around 20,000 devotees.
