Grammy Award winner Gloria Estefan is stepping back from music to give back.

“What it boils down to, is each one of us we can’t expect the government to do the things that need to be done. And in the meantime, private citizens can do a lot more,” she stated. “The good thing about this point in my life that I really love, I have choices and I really do choose.”

The 61-year old icon, of “Conga” fame created the Gloria Estefan Foundation to promote education, health, and cultural development suing the proceeds from her successful career.

Estefan moved to Miami from Cuba when she was two. Her father developed multiple sclerosis after fighting in the Vietnam War and she spent most of her young years caring for him. She began pursuing music while in college and eventually became one of the most well-known Latin American pop stars, selling more than 100 million records during her career.

The Gloria Estefan Foundation has also stepped in during crisis — she and her family were some of the first people on the ground in Puerto Rico to help after Hurricane Maria.

“Puerto Rico’s very close to my heart because it was one of the first places that we ever hit it big, way make before any of the international success,” she stated. “We call Cuba and Puerto Rico, of one bird, the two wings, and the people of Puerto Rico are very close to my heart so we wanted to be a part of letting them know that we were with them.”
