It's been several months since the movie adaptation of Angie Thomas's 2017 bestselling novel The Hate U Give premiered in theaters, but the film has left an unquestionable impression on viewers. The George Tillman Jr.-directed film takes its audience on a thought-provoking journey that tackles racism, police brutality, and black identity - all topics that are still incredibly relevant. The star-studded cast brings the story of Starr (Amandla Stenberg) and Khalil (Algee Smith) to life with startling realism in a way that truly drives home the message behind the movie's inspired title, and is remarkably unforgettable.
In this exclusive clip, Amandla Stenberg shares a touching story of how Russell Hornsby, the actor who plays Starr's father Maeverick Carter, worked with her while shooting an intense scene involving a showdown with the police.
"Russell had this tendency to play with the actor when it wasn't his coverage in order to help their performances and help get something more authentic and beautiful out of them," she explains, adding that his assistance helped to push her to her best acting ability and invoke a sense of pride she hadn't taken the time to experience before. Considering how stunningly riveting her performance as Starr is, she definitely deserves it. Watch the clip above and take the time to check out The Hate U Give again, available on Digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
