Velaiyilla Pattathari Tamil Movie stars Dhanush as an unemployed civil engineer who wouldn't work in any other field. Dhanush's father Samuthirakani considers him irresponsible. Dhanush's mother Saranya Ponvannan is very supportive of him. Dhanush falls in love with his neighbour Amala Paul. Though initially Amala Paul hates Dhanush, eventually she reciprocates his love. Dhanush goes out on a date with Amala Paul. Saranya Ponvannan who has a heart problem . Her lungs are donated to Surabhi. Surabhi offers Dhanush a job in her father's company. Dhanush soon gets an opportunity to work in a big project for the government. But Amitash Pradhan who also wanted the same contract, vows to thwart Dhanush's plan. How Dhanush successfully completes the project forms the crux of the story.

Velaiyilla Pattathari Songs are composed by Anirudh. Anirudh worked with S Janaki for the first time who provided the voice for Saranya Ponvannan. Velaiyilla Pattathari was cinematographer Velraj's debut film as a director.
