00:00By now we all met the sinister Negan who is notorious for both his dark humor as he is for his violence.

00:12But neither the fans of the show nor the regular comic book readers knew much about the past of the villain.

00:24What was his life like before the zombie apocalypse? Why does he act like a pubescent boy?

00:31And what is up with the love for his baseball bat Lucille?

00:41All these questions have recently been answered in a comic special.

00:45The Here Comes Negan graphic novel tells the origin story of Rick's nemesis.

00:51And we are happy to present that story to you.

00:54With his strength and sense for destruction many fans pictured Negan as a former mercenary.

01:01However to the surprise of the fans he turned out to have merely been a ping pong coach at a local high school.

01:10This choice of work does however not come out of the blue completely.

01:14Negan has often been portrayed as an ambitious ping pong player in the comic books before who enjoys slaughtering his fellow saviors during a nice match.

01:23That childlike behavior was distinct in him even back then.

01:27Negan always tried to be the cool teacher who would be loved by the students which is why he constantly cursed and threw profanities at them.

01:40His wife had a huge problem with that and backed him to act appropriately.

01:44During an argument she suddenly passed out. Her diagnosis? Cancer.

01:48That was really hard on Negan who also had to deal with a guilty conscience since he had cheated on his sick wife.

01:54He ended the affair but his wife soon succumbed to her illness and passed away.

01:59Shortly after the zombie apocalypse broke loose.

02:02Negan fell into deep depressions until he became emotionally numb.

02:06During a very interesting conversation Negan confessed exactly that to Alpha.

02:10He told her that within the span of one day he had lost everything and ever since that time he was no longer able to feel anything.

02:17Soon he realized that he himself could bring order to the world again and did not shy away from violent measures in order to achieve this goal.

02:25The savior mentality was therefore established.

02:38He grabbed himself a baseball bat that he covered in barbed wire. Lucille was born.

02:47But where does this love for this weapon come from? Why is he talking about it as if it was a woman?

02:56And why Lucille? Well, Lucille was the name of his wife.

03:00That's right, Negan's iconic weapon was named after his wife and serves as a tribute to her.

03:06This is why Negan has such a sentimental relationship with his killing weapon.

03:18The sinister Negan is therefore quite the tragic character.
