Closer look at implications of N. Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s latest visit to China

While North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has returned home following his fourth visit to China, the two countries are staying tightlipped on the details of the latest summit between the two leaders.
Is it due to the wave of speculation that a second North-U.S. summit is just around the corner?
Our Kim Hyo-sun takes a closer look at the implications of Kim's trip to Beijing.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un traveled to China three times prior to and after the first-ever North Korea-U.S. summit held in June last year.
This is why Kim's fourth visit could signal the next summit between Pyeongyang and Washington will happen in the near future.
While Kim wants to sit down again with U.S. President Donald Trump,... he has made his stance clear.

"If the U.S. continues to force us unilaterally with sanctions and pressure, we will have no other choice but to seek a different direction."

It looks like the North's leader sat down with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss the time, location as well as strategies for the second Kim-Trump summit.
Experts say Beijing has an interest in establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula and adapting to the changing diplomatic landscape in Northeast Asia.

"For President Xi Jinping, it's important progress is made to show his influence to the world as Beijing has been criticized for exerting negative pressure on North Korea."

As for the North, which is in dire need of economic development, China's support is even more crucial due to the stalled talks with Washington.
Kim's latest visit to China, where he squeezed in a trip to an industrial zone,... shows his commitment to engage in economic cooperation with Beijing.
Thus, it's highly likely Kim has pledged to continue exchanges with China in various sectors outside the framework of international sanctions,... while intensifying strategic solidarity with his Chinese counterpart to push the U.S. to offer some form of sanctions relief.
