Located more or less in the heart of the Penwith Moors is this stunning and well preserved ancient village.
This Courtyard House Settlement is slightly newer than many others around however it remains extremely similar to the Iron Age ones. Bosullow Trehyllys dates from between the 2nd and 4th century so is between 1,500 and 2,000 years old.
This ancient village is made up of a number of courtyard houses (Celtic round houses which were joined together, the origins of terraced houses). There is also a possible fogou here.
A fogou is a stone chamber, most are underground, which purposes are unknown and can be found on the sites of ancient villages. Fogous can only be found in the West of Cornwall and are very similar to Souterrains. The most likely explanation for what a fogou is is that it is for rituals however proof of what a fogou is remains a mystery. This fogou is a very rare above ground fogou. There are actually only two above ground fogous, this and the Bosporthennis Beehive Hut near Zennor. Some historians doubt that this and the one at Bosporthennis are even fogous at all and may have been some other construction however many local historians differ and say that they are fogous. I think that both Bosullow Trehyllys and Bosporthennis are fogous because everything about them is the same as underground fogous.
