How Important is Face Weight When Selecting Carpet....? Capell Flooring

Hey. Matt Capell here with Capell Flooring and Interiors here in the Treasure Valley. Hey. I've got another carpet tip for you. Face weight. Face weight is something we get asked about all the time. Well, basically what face weight is is it's how much carpet there is per square inch, and so they give it an ounce rating.
Is face weight important? Well, yes and no. There are carpets, like this right here, that are really thick and dense. Here's the big one. We love this carpet style. It feels really good. It's 80 ounces. That's it's face weight. Then, you have carpets like this. They're a little bit more entry-level. This is still a nice piece of carpet, but it's more like a 25 ounce piece of carpet. It's not quite as good.
But basically what I'm getting at is face weight is just one indication of quality. Carpets that are low-profile like this that have a pattern or what not, usually a lot of these carpets are only 25 to 35 ounces. That's all. But they wear really well, and they do well too. To think that face weight is a catchall and it applies to all carpets and all qualities, it's not really the case. It is one indicator of quality, but it is not the indicator of quality.
Hopefully that makes sense because like you can compare these two. Yeah. This carpet's better, but that's because it's thicker. In this case, the other thing too about this carpet is the tips are a little bit blown at the end, but that's a story for another day. But this carpet's going to wear probably just as well as this one here, and we're talking like 30 ounces to 80 ounces.
One thing that I just tell people is face weight I think is really, really important when picking commercial carpet. With residential carpet, it plays a factor in it, but it's not the one and all for quality. That's just one indicator. If you have any questions on that, I can explain it more in detail, but hopefully that helps, and I'll talk to you soon. Thanks.
