China embraces the winter solstice

In China’s Heilongjiang province, one of the coldest regions in the country, thousands gather in the winter chill to hurl hot water into the icy air in celebration of the solstice. This day marks the start of the coldest period of the solar year, according to the traditional Chinese calendar.
