Drag Race Star Gia Gunn Is Fiercely Advocating for the Transgender Community

Gia Gunn is using her platform on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” to promote transgender self-love and awareness.
“I learned that, in this life, we have one body. We have one life to live,” she said. “You better figure out who that is before it’s too late.”
Gia says that she grew up in a traditional Japanese family with supportive parents, who didn’t try to stifle her feminine personality. She discovered Kabuki theatre at age five, where women’s roles are traditionally played by men.
Gia saw her first drag show when she was 18 and quickly took to the art. Soon enough, she was performing in drag shows around Chicago. She then competed on the sixth season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” But, despite the fame and fun that came with the show, she says she was still neglecting who she really was.
“I was suicidal. I was depressed,” she said. “There was a point where it just got so bad, and I said unless you want to die, unless you wanna not exist on Earth, you need to do something about this.”
Gia began hormone replacement therapy three year ago. She decided to undergo her first transitional surgery with breast implants in October 2018. She raised $30,000 from her supporters and fans to pay for the surgery. But she says that surgery doesn’t and shouldn’t inform a person’s gender.
“Being male or female has nothing to do with what’s between your two legs,” she said. “It has everything to do with who you are as a person.”
