A Medical Doctor by profession and an Indian Classical Vocalist by choice, Amit Arya represents the 7th generation of the Mewati Gharana. He is the director of the Pandit Jasraj Institute Toronto and has performed widely in North America & India.
As a child, he initiated his training with Smt. Anita Khare of Vancouver B.C. and progressed to learning from Smt. Asha Lohia under the Pandit Jasraj School of Music in Vancouver. Since 1999, he has had the privilege and blessing of taking advanced training from the living legend, Sangeet Martand Padma Vibushan Pandit Jasrajji, as well as his senior disciples: Shri Hemang Mehta, Shri Pritam Bhattacharjee & Pandita Tripti Mukherjee. In particular, since 2011, he has has been undergoing rigorous taalim from well known young vocalist, Shri Pritam Bhattacharjee.
A role model of dedication, handwork and perseverance, Amit has the distinction of being the only Canadian born Indian Classical Vocalist who has reached a high level in performance. He has performed widely in North America and is well known, especially in the Toronto area. In 2011, he embarked on his first ever tour of India, where he performed at the Taj Mahotsuv (Agra), Habitat Centre (New Delhi) & the Department of Music, SNDT University (Mumbai). In May 2012, he also performed at a Three Generations Concert with his Guruji Pandit Jasrajji as well as Pandita Tripti Mukherjee. This sold-out concert was broadcast all across Canada on television and received widespread acclaim. His Guruji Pandit Jasrajji has named him the “Mewati Gharana in Toronto.”
