El Chapo trial begins amid heavy security

NEW YORK CITY — The trial of accused Mexican drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman has begun in New York amid unprecedented security measures.
According to the New York Times, the El Chapo case will be heard by an anonymous jury, each of whom are driven to and from their homes to the Federal Court in Brooklyn by armed escorts."
Heavily armed federal marshals and officers with bomb-sniffing dogs have been deployed to stand guard outside the courthouse. Inside, visitors must pass through metal detectors before entering the courtroom.
El Chapo himself is transported from solitary confinement in Manhattan to court via police motorcade, which includes an ambulance and SWAT team, and shuts down the Brooklyn Bridge each time.
More than a dozen witnesses are set to take the stand during the trial, and risk retribution by doing so. Because of this, the court has taken steps to conceal their identities, and have even barred courtroom artists from drawing them, reports Al Jazeera.
