President Trump defended canceling the cemetery visit in France.
President Trump on Tuesday responded to criticism over his cancellation of a cemetery visit in France due to rain. He said in a tweet: "By the way, when the helicopter couldn't fly to the first cemetery in France because of almost zero visibility, I suggested driving. Secret Service said NO, too far from airport & big Paris shutdown. Speech next day at American Cemetary in pouring rain! Little reported-Fake News!"
According to Bloomberg, the White House announced the change of plans in a statement on Saturday, saying, "The President and First Lady's trip to [Aisne-Marne] American Cemetery and Memorial has been canceled due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather."
Chief of Staff John Kelly and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford were chosen to lead the U.S. delegation instead to commemorate the site where around 1,800 American soldiers died during World War I.
Among those who criticized the cancellation of Trump's visit was former Obama aide Ben Rhodes, who tweeted: "I helped plan all of President Obama's trips for 8 years. There is always a rain option. Always."
