OLIVES HARVEST -- TEMPLE

A land of Wheat & Barley, of Vines & Fig Trees & Pomegranates, a Land of Olive Oil & Honey

Our Torah speaks of seven sacred species that grow here in the land of promise:
"A land of wheat and barley,
of vines and fig trees and pomegranates;
a land of olive oil and honey" (Deut 8:8)

Supreme of all these species is the olive tree.
It grows in every kind of soil.
It stays green the whole year round.
And it gives fruit, year after year after year --- for centuries.

Synch Richard When the tree was harvested, they would take sticks and beat the tree. The olives would fall to the cloths underneath and they would seep some oil. This was called the beaten oil. The beaten oil was burned in the menorah in the temple.

Sukkot is the first of our three pilgrimage festivals, when Jews go up to Jerusalem's magnificent Temple.

A wonder of the ancient world,
the Temple was built by King David's son, Solomon,
as the home of our Almighty, invisible God.
Synch Richard The Temple in Jerusalem is the focus of faith and the center of religious life for Jews throughout the world. The city would grow in size, from 30,000 to 300,000 as these pilgrims came to pray and make sacrifice.
Synch Arieh Then you could feel the presence of the Lord, the presence of God not only in the chambers, not only the holy of holiest, but all around in the faces of those people that came together to celebrate the feasts, the Chagim of Israel.
Synch Richard The Temple in Jerusalem was special. This was a Temple that housed the Ark of the Covenant, the Ten Commandments written by the very hand of God and given to Moses on Mt. Sinai.

Covered in gold, flanked by two winged cherubim,
the awesome Ark of the Covenant holds the 10 Commandments,
Written by God himself and given to Moses on Mount Sinai.

But I have heard rumors that the Ark disappeared generations ago,
when Solomon's original Temple was destroyed.

Today, we go up to the rebuilt Second Temple.

Most of us go there only a few times in our lives.
Scripture however tells us that Yeshua went to Jerusalem almost every year -- but then Mary and Joseph knew He was special.

The first time they brought Jesus to the temple
was when He was just one month old.

It was a momentous occasion --
for on that day, Simeon the righteous and the prophetess, Anna,
became the first to publicly recognize Him as Messiah.

Messiah - meaning anointed with holy oil.

After the beaten oil has been taken to the Temple,
the olives are brought to the press.

Crushed under a heavy millstone,
the pulp is then carried in rope bags
across to the pressing arm.

Here, a long wooden beam weighed down with stones
presses the oil out of the crushed fruit.

The first oil to be extracted is the purest.
This is sent to the Priests in the Temple.

The next oil we ourselves use for cooking and eating.

The next goes for burning in our lamps.

And the last - a heavy sludge oil
