A tornado is a rotating column of air that goes from the bottom of a cloud to the ground. Tornadoes will begin with a small cloud storm. Tornadoes are quite short. The maximum they'll last is up to an hour. Also tornadoes are only inland. We can only know about the formation of a tornado 15 to 30 min before. The strongest winds from a tornado can go up to 300 mph.
A hurricane is a huge storm that has different categories. It will start from a category 1 (winds between 74-95 mph) to a category 5 (with winds stronger than 157 mph). Hurricanes will only form over oceans. It can be strong enough to create storm surges. Plus it can be coupled with lots of rain that can cause floods. The wind speed in a hurricane will hardly go over 200 mph. The weather service can predict a hurricane up to 3 weeks before it happens.
