Ilhan Omar becomes first Somali-American in Congress

Fresh from becoming the first Somali-American elected to Congress, Ilhan Omar says she's still enjoying being known for her firsts. The one-time refugee in 2016 became the first Somali elected to a state legislature in the US when she was elected to the Minnesota House. When the Minneapolis-area 5th District congressional seat became open this summer, Omar jumped into the race and won the Democratic nomination. Her victory also makes her one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, along with Democrat Rashida Tlaib, who won a Detroit area seat.
