According to a report by UPI, the United States' Food and Drug Administration announced plans to make greater use of the agency's mandatory recall authority to quickly remove unsafe food from store shelves. Mandatory recalls, part of the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2001, can be issued after companies fail to comply with voluntary recalls. Issuing a mandatory recall reportedly involves food or feed that will cause "serious adverse health consequences or death to humans or animals.
