Tomorrow is the first day of November,... and November is a month typically known in Korea for the college entrance exam, colder weather, and making kimchi.
But since not that long ago, November has also become synonymous with online shopping, as major online shopping malls kick off their biggest sales event of the year.
Hong Yoo has the details.
Korea's largest online shopping malls are holding their biggest sales event of the year starting today.

Previously considered an off-season month in terms of sales and revenue in the past, November is in the spotlight for being one of the best months to attract shoppers, in and out of the country.
Amid the increasing popularity and dominance of major sales events overseas, such as Black Friday in North America and Singles' Day in China, major Korean online retailers have come up with their own special promotions.

One of Korea's biggest online shopping mall ,11STREET, made more than 56 million U.S. dollars just in one day, on November 11th last year, through its discount event known as the "Eleventh Festival".
The same event is planned for this year as well.

"Electronic devices and home appliances like TVs were the most popular items sold last year. We have analyzed customers' shopping patterns, based on their age and gender. With the results of our study, we plan on optimizing our product catalog to suit the preferences of our online customers."

This year, major names in the online shopping industry are targeting not only local customers but also foreign shoppers as well.
GMarket, another household name in online shopping, is kicking off today its event called "Mega G" which run through November 11th.
The company even has a dedicated platform called the "Gmarket Global Shop" which makes the purchase process much easier for foreign shoppers.

"Our platform is provided in four different languages, namely Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese. When foreigners purchase from abroad, they can use diverse types of credit cards and online payment methods such as Alipay or Paypal, thus simplifying their shopping experience."

The worldwide popularity of K-pop was reflected on the hottest purchase items among foreigners.
K-pop goods alone showed a sales increase of 77 percent on-year.

With many sales events planned for November, the industry hopes that the month can become a major shopping season in Korea, similar to “Black Friday” in the U.S. or “Singles Day” in China.
