President Trump stressed that South Korea will not lift sanctions on North Korea without the approval of the U.S.
This is what Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday,... as he addressed the South Korean foreign minister's remarks made at the National Assembly that Seoul may mull over lifting the so-called May 24 measures.
The sanctions were imposed in 2010 following the North's attack on the South Korean warship Cheonan that killed 46 Navy sailors.
The U.S. State Department also reaffirmed its stance that lifting sanctions must be proceeded by the regime's denuclearization.
When Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency asked the U.S. State Department for its response to Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha's remarks,... an official replied that President Trump has made clear that sanctions will be lifted only after the North abandons its nuclear and missile programs.
While State Department deputy spokesperson Robert Palladino did not specifically mention Kang's remarks,... he also told reporters on Wednesday that Washington will maintain its stance of only removing sanctions after the North's denuclearization.
