M1 in Ireland closed as telephone cables brought down

Traffic is stationary on the M1 towards Belfast as Storm Ali sweeps across Ireland and damaged trees and buildings.

Footage captured today (September 19) on the motorway near a service station shows stationary cars as high winds blow leaves in multiple directions.

The traffic was reportedly caused by the felling of power lines across both lanes of the main route between Dublin and Belfast.

The filmer writes: "Been stranded on the motorway for an hour already and no sign of moving."

One woman has already reportedly died as 80 mph winds batter Ireland and Scotland.
