00:00Many hundreds of years ago, the good King Richard,
00:29known as Richard the Lion-Hearted, left England to take part in the Crusades,
00:34the war against the heathens who had captured the Holy City.
00:38In his absence, he placed his brother John on the throne.
00:42As soon as he was king, John turned on the good nobles of the kingdom,
00:47stole their goods, and drove them out of England.
00:53Among these nobles were the old Earl of Huntington and his son Robin.
00:59Father, I've come to say goodbye.
01:01Robin, where are you going?
01:03To Sherwood Forest.
01:04King John has declared me an outlaw, and an outlaw I will be.
01:12In Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood banded together with other young men like himself,
01:16banished by the Wicked King, men like Will Scarlet.
01:21Outlaws we are, Will Scarlet, but outlaws such as never were before and never will be.
01:27Just how do you mean, Robin Hood?
01:28I mean this, Will.
01:30Now, let me show you.
01:32Do you see those two fat men coming down the road?
01:35I see them, a couple of merchants, rogues and wealthy.
01:39And do you see that old woman in rags, weeping in sheer hunger?
01:43I see her too.
01:45Well, watch, and keep a hand to your arrow in case I need help.
01:52And so quickly, they became known far and wide.
01:56Robin Hood and his merry men of Sherwood Forest,
02:00taking from the evil to give to the poor,
02:03defenders of the weak and oppressed,
02:05the one hope of England's people.
02:11Sometime later, Robin set off by himself in the forest.
02:18He started across a bridge which lay across a stream,
02:21a bridge consisting of a single log of wood.
02:24But facing him, blocking the way, was a stranger,
02:28a tall man with broad, powerful shoulders.
02:31I'm afraid there's only room for one of us to cross at a time.
02:35I think it ought to be the better man.
02:37Stand and fight.
02:38Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
02:42With only wooden sticks as weapons, they fought long and hard.
02:47Finally, with one quick, powerful motion,
02:49the stranger knocked Robin Hood into the stream.
02:52Ah!
02:53Well, well done, fellow.
03:02What do they call you?
03:03John Little is my name.
03:05John Little.
03:07Well, I'll call you Little John.
03:11And I want you to join my band as my next in command.
03:14And now the band of merry men was complete, and just in time.
03:23For King John had posted a reward of 10,000 pounds for the capture of Robin Hood.
03:29And none was trying harder to win that reward than the Sheriff of Nottingham.
03:33Robin, I have news.
03:35The Sheriff of Nottingham is staging an archery contest with a golden arrow as the prize.
03:39A golden arrow?
03:40What a prize.
03:41His purpose in holding the contest is to lure you there.
03:44That may be, but I shall go anyway.
03:46In disguise.
03:47The distance will be 50 paces.
04:00You, that beggar over there, get out of the way.
04:07Hi.
04:08Why, I'm one of the marksmen, sir.
04:10You?
04:11A marksman?
04:12That's rich!
04:19One by one, the finest bowmen in the land shot their arrows.
04:25Finally, one arrow lay in the exact center of the circle. A bull's eye!
04:30The winner is Adam of Adair!
04:37Pardon, sheriff, I have not yet competed.
04:40You? Well, maybe it will bring us a laugh.
04:48Robin let fly.
04:51Hooray!
04:53A perfect shot, right on top of the arrow in the center, splitting it down the middle. Robin had won!
05:00A shot like that, only one man in all this land can shoot so well. Robin Hood! After him! Catch him!
05:12But the sheriff was too late. Robin was already speeding back to Sherwood Forest.
05:22As Robin entered the forest, a knight appeared and challenged him.
05:26In the midst of their battle, the knight suddenly put down his sword.
05:30Enough, enough, I didn't recognize you.
05:33Why, it's your majesty, King Richard the Lionheart, back from the crusade.
05:44Robin Hood, your exile is over. You and your men, come back to your homes.
05:52But Robin Hood and his men declined the king's offer.
05:55They preferred to remain in Sherwood Forest together, living their adventurous lives, taking from evil men to give to the poor.
06:21To be continued...
