Academy’s ‘Popular’ Oscar Category Postponed The new category meant to recognize “outstanding achievement in popular film” will not be introduced at the 91st Academy Awards as planned. The Academy will “examine and seek additional input regarding the new category.” The board further explained that announcing the award late in the year “created challenges for films that have already been released.” The category was announced in August. However, the new award was met with criticism. Many assumed Black Panther would have won the award due to its undeniable popularity, glowing reviews and $1.3 billion grossed worldwide.
