More than 100 firefighters were called into action on Saturday night to put out a fire which engulfed a well-known building in the Romanian city of Oradea.

It took firefighters three hours to extinguish the blaze at the Greek-Catholic Episcopal Palace on Union Square.

Fearing part of the building's tower was about to collapse, firefighters at one point called for help from members of the public to move a car which was parked close the palace in the street below.

According to an eyewitness, the tower did indeed fall minutes later on the spot where the vehicle had been parked.

Officials said on Sunday that the total area affected by the fire was 1,300 square meters.

No-one was injured in the blaze.
