"Like being in a war zone": Jumbo jet bombs California wildfire

A remarkable video has emerged from California showing a jumbo jet just a few metres above homes as it battled the so-called "Holy Fire" earlier this month.

The clip, which was taken just before residents were forced to evacuate the area on August 8, shows the aircraft releasing red fire retardant virtually onto homes in the Corona area of Horsethief Canyon.

"Crazy low! Crazy scary! Like being in a war zone!" said filmer Gail Robinson.

"We evacuated right after this for four days," she added.

The fire, which started on August 6, is still burning in Riverside and Orange counties but is now at least 83 per cent contained.

It has burned 22,986 acres or 93 square kilometres.
