A study conducted by local researchers has found a cup of coffee a day can lower the risk of chronic kidney disease.
They say anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components in coffee help prevent the disease.
Cho Sung-min reports.
A team of Korean researchers published a report that highlights a nother benefit of drinking a cup of coffee per day. According to the Yonsei University team, the daily intake of at least a cup of coffee lowers the risks of contracting CKD, or chronic kidney disease.
CKD refers to a kidney that loses more than forty percent of its functions.
The disease doesn't show any symptoms in its early stages, but as the kidneys start losing their abilities to filter and excrete waste from the blood, symptoms, such as leg swelling, nausea, and dizziness start to show.
Complications including heart disease and anemia can also result in CKD patients.
The team's study first focused on the correlation between daily coffee consumption and the risks of contracting CKD, after collecting information from nearly 9-thousand people aged between forty and seventy years old and during a study period of eleven years.
According to the researchers, those who had one cup of coffee per day had 24-percent lower risks of developing the kidney impairment...while people who had at least two cups of coffee every day showed lesser chance of preventing the disease.
Researchers said their findings indicate that anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in coffee are protecting the kidneys from CKD.
"Many studies in the past prove that coffee contains anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants. If taken consistently over the time, coffee also helps reducing blood pressure in many patients."
Researchers recommend people to drink a cup of coffee per day to keep their kidneys in good condition, but they also advised against drinking your morning cup of joe... sans any creamer, refined sugar or syrups.
