Ice factory gears up production due to heatwave

Unusually high temperatures in Korea are keeping ice-making factories running day and night.... with demand for ice skyrocketing.
Yoon Jung-min reports.
Massive chunks of ice are produced at this ice factory in Gangwon-do Province. And it's busiest during summer, especially over the last couple of weeks when extreme temperatures have been hitting the country.

The ice-making plant mass-produces some 230 tons of ice each day. The fresh ice cubes are packed into plastic bags or cups and quickly delivered to restaurants, cafes and convenience stores. Around 300 million plastic cups containing ice cubes are sold each year at convenience stores around the country.

As the demand for ice is soaring, the plant is operating around the clock but it is still short-staffed. Some workers even canceled their holiday plans to meet the flood of orders.

“We cannot fully satisfy demand even though we produce ice 24-hours a day.”

With the heatwave forecast to linger for a while longer. The ice factory is gearing up for even more orders.
