Heron Preston has always been fond of flipping and reworking recognized and revered fashion symbols, but his latest project might just be his most ambitious outing to date. Inspired in tandem by his admiration of workwear and a brush with an errant plastic bag while on vacation, “UNIFORM” sees Preston up-cycling, embroidering and screen-printing donated garments for New York City’s Department of Sanitation. As a result of its eco-friendly inspirations, the project simultaneously elevates the uniform while also contributing to the DSNY’s 0X30 campaign, which hopes to limit and eventually eliminate waste sent to landfills by the year 2030.
