According to Reuters, wind whipping around the coastal Greek village of Mati is partially responsible for devastating wildfires that killed at least 80 people.
The union head for fire brigade employees in Greece said the fire became a blowtorch aimed at the village after winds suddenly shifted.
Surrounded by pine forests, that sudden shift in the winds left residents with 20 minutes to escape.
Hundreds of residents fled to the sea, seeking refuge from the fires in the water.
