A year after GST’s introduction and multiple GST council meetings later sanitary napkins were made tax free on 22 July. Sanitary napkins were earlier under the 12 percent tax slab. Several women’s groups and NGOs called for ending the “lahu ka lagaan” and making female hygiene products tax free as they are a necessity, not a luxury.
The GST Council cut tax rates on 88 items, including footwear, refrigerator, washing machine and small screen TV. The revised tax rates will come into effect from July 27.
