This Shadow Drawing Project Is Perfect For Entertaining Your Kids This Summer

Looking to ensure that your kids spend their time outdoors this summer instead of parked in front of various screens?
This shadow drawing project from child care center Above and Beyond is a great way to keep your kids busy outside.

Not only will this project provide your kids with a creative outlet, but it’s also something they can do outside over and over again as long as the warm weather lasts.
What’s shadow drawing? Check it out.

We learned about this fun art project when the Above and Beyond, Te Puna Facebook page first posted about it:
As you can see, it involves setting up drawing subjects (they used fun animal toys) and paper.

Make sure the subjects are in the sun and casting a shadow onto the paper for your kids to trace — and there you have it! Instant fun!
If you need some inspiration, you can find plenty of kiddos having fun with shadow drawing on Instagram.
User Rachel Drew shared this photo of a little boy drawing a dinosaur based on its shadow:
In addition to animal figurines, you can use small blocks to create various scenes for your children to sketch.
Check out the creative setup in this photo, shared by Instagrammer Noor Al Masri:

Here’s a fun idea. Have one or more kids stand in the sun to cast a shadow and let another little one trace their figures with chalk, as seen in this photo shared by Instagram user Mette Egholm Velso:
If you’re able to, it’d be great to jump in on this activity with your kids because this is something all ages can enjoy.
Besides — nothing beats spending time with your family in the great outdoors.

Even celeb-status parents have noted how much they enjoy quality bonding time spent playing outside.
Kate Middleton penned a letter to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, writing, “Spending quality time together is such an important aspect of family life and for me, as a mother, it is the simple family moments like playing outside together that I cherish.”
And Britney Spears also enjoys getting crafty with her sons on a beautiful day:

This is something most parents can relate to — so bring on the summertime bonding sessions, right?

If you’re loving the idea of outdoor art projects for you and your little ones, there are plenty where this shadow drawing idea came from.

You and the kiddos could also make adorable rock art together, take a nature walk or spend some time watching birds.
