RATAJSKI & WINSTANLEY TAKE MASTERS CROWNS
England's Lorraine Winstanley and Poland's Krzysztof Ratajski lifted the biggest titles of their careers to date when both were crowned 2017 Winmau World Masters Champions.
Lorraine defeated Australian Corrine Hammond by 5 legs to 2 in an enthralling final. Hammond scored the better early doors but Lorriane was the better at the double and after four legs we were level at two legs all. Lorraine then improved her scoring and that added to her finishing power saw Lorraine run out a convincing winner 5 legs to 2 to be crowned Champion. Both ladies were appearing in their first Masters Final and all credit to Corrine who was the first Australian lady to reach the final but the night belonged to Lorraine who was a deserving Champion after enjoying her best year to date on the BDO circuit.
Earlier in the day Lorraine enjoyed a 4-2 triumph over Tricia Wright while Corrine whitewashed Sarah Roberts in the Semi Finals 4-0 with a much improved display from the previous round to set up her Final showdown with Lorraine.
In the men's Final Ratajski dealt with the pressure from the off and it appeared tiredness was creeping in to both finalists after a long and grueling day of darts but it was the Polish star who took the advantage and raced to a 4-1 lead at the interval. Could last years runner-up McGeeney respond and avoid being on the losing side for a second consecutive year. Krzysztof continued however after the break and in the blink of an eye he took the sixth set to lead the number one seed 5-1. Double 9 gave him the first leg of the next set and he followed that with double 16 in the next leg at the first attempt to take the title 6-1 and become the first Polish player to lift the World Masters Crown.
Mark McGeeney had started proceedings off at The Spa, Bridlington this afternoon with a comprehensive 4-0 success over former Champion Martin Philips from Wales. Germany's Gabriel Clemens then produced an accomplished display to get the better of James Hurrell 4-3.
Cmeron Menzies who would've quietly fancied his chances was simply too good for Jim Williams and booked his semi final place comfortably with a resounding 4-0 win. The final quarter final in the Men's event saw defending Champion Glen Durrant who was looking for a third consecutive title come up against Poland's Krzysztof Ratajski and Glen despite showing glimpses of his darting ability came up short on the night as Krzysztof ran out a 4-2 winner to set up a semi final with Scotland's Menzies.
The first semi final was incredibly tight and it was no surprise to see it go to a final deciding leg and it was McGeeney who landed the winning double to break the heart of the valiant German Gabriel Clemens. The second men's semi final was a much more one sided encounter, Ratajski was simply too powerful in all departments and brushed Cameron Mebzies aside 5-1 to reach the biggest final of his career.
The Spa, Bridlington has once again been a fantastic darting venue and with the knowledgable and supportive crowds and the live TV coverage on Eurosport and Winmau TV it has definitely been a World Masters to remember.
