Thousands of Thessaloniki bikers protest Macedonia name deal

Thousands of bikers in Greece's second city took part in a protest in the early hours of this morning (July 3) against a Macedonia name deal.

Protesters on motorcycles and in cars headed towards the monument to Alexander the Great monument on the Thessaloniki seafront, demanding the name deal be cancelled.

The agreement would see the former Yugoslav nation's name changed from Macedonia to the Republic of North Macedonia.

Since Macedonia's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, the name of the Balkan state has been the source of appropriation concerns in Greece.

The deal has been met by mixed reactions, with nationalists on both sides opposing the change and others believing it brings an end to a 27-year conflict rooted in national identity.
