Argentina has taken significant steps towards legalizing abortion, after the lower house of its Congress approved an abortion bill by a small margin on Thursday, June 14, in Buenos Aires.Following a marathon debate, 129 lawmakers voted to legalize elective abortions up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, while 125 voted against, and one abstained, La Capital reported. The bill was subsequently sent for approval by the Argentine Senate, the report said. If it is also passed by the Senate, Argentina would become one of the countries in Latin America with the most liberal abortion regimes. This video shows a crowd of campaigners celebrating.Argentina’s parliamentary vote came weeks after Ireland voted overwhelmingly in favor of repealing a constitutional restriction on abortion, paving the way for broader legislation.
