Tom Cruise has performed some of the most dangerous stunts in the history of cinema. To mark the release of ‘American Made,’ let’s look at some of his crazier risks and ask the question: How the hell is Tom Cruise still alive?

For the movie ‘American Made,’ Tom Cruise is once again stepping into the pilot seat of an airplane. But for Tom Cruise, American Made from director Doug Liman will at least keep him inside the aircraft. The Mission Impossible movies have always been a showcase for incredible Tom Cruise stunts, and we’re starting off our video with a look at the Tom Cruise plane stunt in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. For this crazy stunt, Tom Cruise was strapped to the outside of an A400 Airbus that flew 5,000 feet in the air. Despite only hanging on by a thin rope in this Tom Cruise stunt, the real danger faced by Tom Cruise wasn’t falling to the ground, it was from the debris flying at his face at hundreds of miles per hour. To combat this, the crew came up with massive contact lenses that covered up the famous Tom Cruise eyes. The end result is an unbelievable stunt that once again begs the question: How the hell is Tom Cruise alive?

Speaking of eyes, our second Tom Cruise stunt comes from Mission Impossible 2, directed by John Woo. Mission Impossible 2 ends with a climactic fist-fight between Tom Cruise and villain, Dougray Scott. And to give the scene some extra tension, a brilliant stunt was devised on the spot by director John Woo. MI:2 required Dougray Scott to plunge a knife millimeters from the eye of Tom Cruise. Stunt performers everywhere winced just thinking about it, but his insistence on using a real knife without any kind of optical illusion or special effect must’ve gone a long way towards those crazy Tom Cruise rumors. To film the Tom Cruise scene, John Woo tied the handle of the knife to a precisely measured cord that stopped it just a quarter inch from the eye of Tom Cruise. Even with Dougray Scott stabbing at full strength, the eye of Tom Cruise stuntman remained un-pierced by the extremely sharp knife.

Another crazy Tom Cruise stunt comes from his desire to climb all the things. In MI:2, Tom Cruise climbed the sheer cliffs of Dead Horse Point in Utah, with just a thin rope connecting him to safety. Despite the risks involved, Cruise performed nearly the entire Tom Cruise climb all by himself, and even though they erased the CGI later, it’s still an extremely impressive Tom Cruise stunt. Of course, that doesn’t compare to the Tom Cruise Burj Khalifa climb in Dubai for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. To see Tom Cruise climb the tallest building in the world was a mind blowing sight for moviegoers, a stunt Tom Cruise must be proud of. Tom Cruise climbed the Burj Khalifa for days, and even though CGI erased his safety wires the crew must have genuinely thought that Tom Cruise is insane. From their base on the 123rd floor, it was a long way down to the streets of Dubai, but he managed to pull off this insane Tom Cruise stunt - just like he did when Tom Cruise held his breath for over six minutes in another Mission Impossible movie. When it comes to being American Made, Tom Cruise truly fits the bill, and his crazy Tom Cruise stunts just prove that Tom Cruise is one of the most dedicated actors in Hollywood.
