The Impact of the Obama Administration on the Science and Media

Guccione:    Well, that's a wonderful question.  I think Science media will become far more relevant because there will be more energy put into Science in this country.  Science media has been mostly relevant for stuff coming from other countries.  I think the biggest changes will be in Medicine and they'll be precipitated by allowing stem cell research to openly be conducted.  We are learning more and more about the universe although paradoxically it means we learn, then we know less and less, which is kind of one of the great mysteries of life.  But, I think there will be a general greater interest from the average person, because there'll be more enthusiasm for Science in all levels, academic, governmental researches will stay in this country rather than go to Europe.  So, yeah, I think it's nothing but a positive.  I think the last administration of all the terrible issues I have and many people obviously had for that administration, one of them was the retardation of Science.  And I don't just mean, you know, sending people to moon or wherever.  A lot of that is cosmetic.  I mean, Kennedy didn't care about going to moon.  He cared about beating the Russians to the moon.  It's a big difference.  But I think, now, we have an administration that is much more youthful in its, you know, thinking and its optimism and that's a great energy that Science will particularly be nourished by.
