A redesigned new Ford Mustang was unveiled by the press at 12:01 AM EST on November 18, 2008, prior to the Los Angeles International Auto Show. As it has been hinted by Ford and other sources in the weeks running up to the unveiling, the new Mustang is a revision of the 2005-new models, remaining on the D2C platform. The chief designer of the new Mustang is Doug Gaffka, who was previously responsible for the 2008-new Bullitt and other Ford vehicles. The new Mustangs exterior is an evolution of 2005-new Mustang, being sculpted for a leaner, more muscular appearance and better aerodynamic performance (coefficient of drag has been reduced by 4% on V6 models and 7% on GT models [16]). Specific changes to the exterior include a restyled Mustang emblem (the first time this has been done since the Mustang was introduced), a new headlight design with integrated turn signals, a prominent powerdome hood to complement the cars muscular exterior, and revised three-lens tailights with LEDs that blink in sequence for turn indication. Additionally, the new Mustang GT uses smaller fog lights than the 2005-new models though they are still mounted in the cars grille. Fog lights on V6 models (apart of a revised Pony Package first introduced for 2006) are now mounted in the lower fascia below the grille. In all models, the radio antenna has been moved to the rear of the car and the lock for the trunk no longer features a keyhole on the trunk lid, substituting with a remote trunk release only.[17] In spite of its changes, the new Mustangs overall exterior dimensions are nearly identical to the 2005-new models.[18]\r
The Mustangs stylistic evolution continues on into the interior with a revised design that features higher quality thermoplastic olefin surfaces, available real aluminum trim, and improved fit and finish. The intent behind the design of the interior was to get away from the linear nature of the previous Mustang, being sculpted in a way that would better reflect the Mustangs athletic exterior shapes and convey a sense of power and speed. Gary Morales, Design Manager for the new Mustang, said about the attention to detail paid to the Mustangs new interior, We never stopped at, Good enough. We only stopped at right.[19]\r

Powertrains for the new Mustang have been carried over from the 2005-new models for both the base Mustang and Mustang GT. While the 4.0 L V6 for base Mustangs remains unchanged, the Mustang GTs 4.6 L V8 has been revised to specifications similar to that of the 2008-new Mustang Bullitts 4.6 L V8, resulting in 315 hp (235 kW) @ 6000 rpm and 325 lb·ft (441 N·m) of torque @ 4250 rpm.[18] Other mechanical features for the new Mustang include new spring rates and dampers to improve ride quality and control, standard AdvanceTrac trion and stability control system on all models with a special Sport Mode setting on GT models, and new wheel sizes. Base V6 models come with standard 17-inch wheels and optional 18-inch wheels while GT models come with standard 18-inch wheels and optional 19-inch wheels. For the Mustang GT, two performance packages are newly available for new. GT Track Package I features higher performance front brake pads, a more aggressive 3.73:1 rear axle, and a recalibrated AdvanceTrac system. GT Track Package II, which will be available later in the model year, features higher performance front and rear brake pads, stabilizer bars and rear lower control arms from the GT500, uniquely tuned shocks and struts, Pirelli summer tires (includes automatic upgrade to 19-inch wheels), a 3.73:1 rear axle with carbon plates in the differential, and a recalibrated AdvanceTrac system.[16] V6 and GT models are expected to have a small overall weight gain over their new counterparts.[20]\r
Other new features and options for the new Mustang include Ford SYNC, dual-zone automatic climate control, an updated navigation system with Sirius Travel Link, a capless fuel filler, and a reverse camera system to aid in backing up. The new Mustang will be released for the Spring of new.[21]
