Moon heads to Washington for Trump summit as North Korea relationship on the rocks

북한, 전방위 대남 압박... 한미정상회담이 분수령 - 봉영식 박사 대담

To discuss more about the upcoming summit in Washington and other Korean peninsula issues, we have with us Dr. Bong Young-shik, a researcher at the Yonsei Institute for North Korean Studies. Thank you for your time today.

Pleasure to be here.

1 - As we just heard in that last report, President Moon Jae-in and Donald Trump spoke on the phone this weekend. Now they were going to meet within 3 or 4 days, what do you think they needed to talk about so urgently about that could not wait just a few days?

2 - North Korea will obviously be at the forefront of the Moon-Trump summit, but do you think they will actually talk details of the so-called 'road map' towards the regime's denuclearization? Do you think Trump will share these plans with Moon?

3 - There have been suggestions that President Moon will use the recently installed special hotline with Kim Jong-un for the first time after the summit with Trump. Of course that just speculation for now... but what role does Moon Jae-in have to play between Washington and Pyongyang, now that relations are starting to hit the rocks again?

4 - North Korea has brought up this issue of defectors, along with other contentious disputes such as the joint South Korea-U.S. military drills, and comments made by defector and former North Korean ambassador Thae Yong-ho, over the last few days. Pyongyang had not brought up these issues in a while but now it seems as though the North is bringing up a new issue every day. Do you think this will now continue?

5 - Immediately after the South Korea-U.S. summit, on Wednesday Korean time, is when Pyongyang said it would dismantle the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in front of foreign journalists. South Korean journalists had originally also been invited, and they've left for China today to try and go to the site, but it's not clear whether they will be allowed in during this uneasy time. But it does seem North Korea is going ahead with the dismantling of the nuclear test site?
