In Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, Alia Bhatt will be seen playing one of the most complex characters in her short career. The film releases today. Let’s try and decipher who Sehmat Khan of Raazi could have been - a young Kashmiri Muslim girl, daughter of a businessman, who agrees to fulfil her father’s wish to be an undercover Indian agent in Pakistan. For the purpose, she is married off to a serving officer of the Pakistani army. All this unfolds in the year 1971 when India and Pakistan went to war. Before this as well, Alia has never shied away from challenges. Her roles in Highway, Udta Punjab and Dear Zindagi were complex too. In Highway, she plays a girl who must face multiple challenges -- she is kidnapped, faces the threat of rape and has to endure physical hardships. She also has to conquer her demons for as a child she has been molested. Finally, she must make sense of her love for a man who is unlike her in every way. In Udta Punjab, she plays a young labourer from Bihar who becomes a drug addict and is sexually and physically abused. Alia as a labourer? Hard to imagine, right. However, she pulled it off with ease. In Dear Zindagi, she played a urban youngster, who must fight depression, societal prejudice and wants her doctor's affection too.
